I want to take a little break away from the major Nokia X6 review I’m doing just now to directly address one of the issues that I’m seeing in the comments both of the X6 review and in other products that are reviewed both here on AAS and on other tech sites: the use of third party software to compensate for

Are bulging App Stores overrated? Whichever Symbian-powered phone you own (or even if you have an iPhone, Blackberry, etc), could you manage with only three third party (i.e  Read More →
Phones Show Chat 2 and the Nokia N97
In Phones Show Chat episode 2 , AAS’s Tim Salmon and I chat about software issues in the Nokia N97, have a few jibes at the iPhone (always a somewhat easy target, I know, but…) and manage to bring quite a bit of Android to the party as well. Third party IMDb widget released
Moubail is a handy place for third party S60 5th Edition widgets, being the home of DeviceInfo, which I’ve used for the last year. IMDb is the latest project, providing touchscreen, Web-like lookup of information in the Internet Movie Database. Read on for some screens, links and comments.  Read More →
A second chance at free Symbian Party tickets
Just a quick note that in two hours time, at 5pm BST, Symbian are giving away a second batch of 50 free tickets to their Tuesday night party at the Science Museum. You know the drill – free drinks, entertainment and all the industry networking you could want didn’t get a chance to get done during day one of the Show.  Read More →
Review: Nokia E72 – part 1: the E71 upgrade, a Solid Smartphone
It’s tempting to look at the Nokia E72 as just a variation on the popular E71, but looking at it in detail, there are a surprising number of detailed improvements. With only a couple of software gotchas, and despite its necessarily-small screen, the E72 looks to be one of the most desirable candybar smartphones for 2010. Here’s part 1...
Personalising your apps and the mystery of the missing apps
If your smartphone is all about personalisation, why is it that we are left with the manufacturer’s default choice of applications in the firmware? Years ago you checked the memory size and radio frequencies, now it’s interrogating the firmware load-out. It’s a given that no matter what Symbian OS product comes out, there are caveats...

The Proporta 3400mAh charger revamp keeps the Nokia N86 going
Knowing he owned a Nokia N86 and iPhone, I arranged for Nokia Creative guy James Burland to get a review Turbocharger 3400 from Proporta – this is the revamped device, not the original white one I reviewed two and a half years ago . As it happens, James has published the review over on All About iPhone, so go read it there , I too can vouch...
Everything you wanted to know about the N97’s v20 firmware?
Over at N97 Fanatics, Kyron’s put up a lovely tech walkthrough of the improvements in the Nokia N97’s firmware for the upcoming v20 release . Though there are a few things he wasn’t allowed to mention, he does cover memory, performance and stability issues.  Read More →
N97 tops USA camera smartphone head-to-head
I’ll be accused of cherry picking links again, but what the heck, it’s nice to see a USA tech web site giving space to the Nokia N97, in this case pitching its camera against that of the HTC Touch Pro 2 (Tilt 2) and the (also 5 megapixel) Motorola Droid . As perhaps might be expected, the N97 rather runs away with the test, but then the...
